You can control nearly every function of the printer from it, as well as send firmware updates to it. If you have a LAN with a server, you can use HP's WebJetAdmin, which is a very handy management utility.

Just create a port on the PC with the printer's IP, install the driver, and print. No need to tether it to a PC or share it.

Same for the 4050n, whose drivers can be snagged from here. Just download the basic PCL5e, 6 or PS drivers from HP here. If for some reason you do go with the 2200, do yourself a favor and don't use the driver CD.

If you do any PDF printing, the 4050n will outpace the 2200d. We've found that the 4000 class drivers play nice with a wider variety of programs than the 2200 drivers do, and print faster across the board. The volume of printing the users do provides a boatload of compatibility info for drivers and apps. Since the 4050n is network ready, you can use something like HP's Webjetdirect to configure it from a web browser.ĭrivers: We've got a few dozen 4000 class (4000, 4100 & 4050n units in use, and a couple hundred 2100, 2200d & 2300l models in use my job. Plus it allows you do configure the printer's many options from the unit. For a single user it's not as bad, but since the drivers provide little to no useful feedback, having an LCD readout is a real convenience. When you have a couple hundred deployed to users, this becomes a support issue. It just uses leds that flash or change color from green to orange to tell you what it's doing. LCD display - as mentioned earlier, the 2200d has no display. The number of calls our helpdesk gets for that would make you shed a tear. The 2200 on the other hand, uses a weak plastic mechanism, that will slide back if you shove paper into the tray with a bit too much force. Stronger paper size adjuster - the 4050n uses an adujuster that is plastic with a metal backplate, so it doesn't slip back easily. Larger standard tray capacity - it can take a full ream of 500 pages, as opposed to the half ream a 220 can hold with the stock tray. Mainly it's a few inches deeper and a lot taller. The footprint of the 4050 isn't really that much larger than the 2200. Thanks for the advice guys, any more very welcome - View image here:. Personally i have only found one place that offers compatible 2200 toner and that was ebay, so prefer something with longevity over duplex (heck, i can pick up pages and turn them around with the best of them - View image here: - ) But letting all of these beauties just go into a dank, dark storage warehouse just seems WRONG - View image here: - I just need to double check that nobody will be getting in trouble for this freebie and i'm away - View image here: - Free stuff from work is all well and good but i don't want to be taking something that isn't destined for the bin. The company doesn't use their own printers now, they get a whole printers plus toner package deal thing. So my supervisor is offering me one, since he knows i like geek freebies. I'd happily take both and the 4000 but that might seem greedy - View image here: - These things are going into storage (as in, never to see the light of day until some alien explorers visit in the year 10,467). Okay, done, sounds like the 4050 is winning big time. Okay so let me sum up the arguments in favour of the 2200dn:
